1 Dead, 1 Seriously Injured in Pasco County Motorcycle Crash
A tragic motorcycle crash in Pasco County has left one person dead and another seriously injured. The accident happened late Thursday morning, September 18, at the intersection of U.S. Highway 19 and New York Avenue in Hudson, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
Troopers reported that shortly after 11:30 a.m., a 33-year-old New Port Richey man was riding eastbound on New York Avenue with a 32-year-old woman passenger on his motorcycle. At the same time, an 80-year-old Hudson woman was driving a 2006 Infiniti M35 westbound on New York Avenue.
As the Hudson driver attempted to turn onto U.S. 19, she entered the path of the motorcycle, causing the motorcyclist to collide with her vehicle.
- The motorcyclist was rushed to a nearby hospital but later died from his injuries.
- His passenger was also transported to the hospital with serious injuries.
- The Infiniti driver was uninjured.
The crash remains under investigation by FHP.
Motorcycle accidents like this often happen at intersections, where drivers of larger vehicles may fail to notice or properly yield to motorcycles. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), about 42% of motorcycle crashes occur when another vehicle is turning left across the path of an oncoming motorcycle.
In this case, investigators will likely examine factors such as:
- Right of way at the intersection
- The speed of the motorcycle and Infiniti
- Whether driver distraction or impairment was involved
- Visibility issues, including whether the motorcycle’s smaller size made it harder for the Infiniti driver to see
Potential Legal Claims
Even before the final investigation is complete, this case raises the question of liability and legal options for the victims and their families.
If the investigation confirms the Infiniti driver failed to yield, the motorcyclist’s family may have grounds for a wrongful death claim under Florida Statute §768.19. Compensation could cover:
- Funeral and burial costs
- Medical expenses prior to death
- Loss of companionship and support for surviving family members
- Lost income the motorcyclist would have contributed
The passenger, who sustained serious injuries, may pursue a personal injury claim against the at-fault driver. Damages may include:
- Current and future medical bills
- Rehabilitation and long-term care if needed
- Lost wages and diminished earning capacity
- Pain and suffering
Because she was a passenger, she would likely not be considered at fault, strengthening her potential claim.
Florida law requires motor vehicle operators to carry minimum insurance, but motorcycle insurance coverage can vary. Possible sources of recovery may include:
- The at-fault driver’s liability insurance
- The motorcyclist’s own insurance policy (if it included passenger coverage)
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, depending on policy details
For the victim’s family and the injured passenger, the days ahead will be filled with grief, medical challenges, and uncertainty. While no legal action can undo the tragedy, pursuing a claim may provide financial stability and hold negligent parties accountable.
At intersections, a single careless mistake can have devastating consequences for motorcyclists and their loved ones. This Hudson crash serves as a reminder for all drivers to stay alert, look twice, and share the road safely.
