Madison County Crash Kills 9-Year-Old, Critically Injures 5-Year-Old and Driver
A devastating crash in Madison County has claimed the life of a child and left two others with critical injuries, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP). The tragedy highlights how a single moment of driver error can forever alter the lives of families.
Troopers reported that the accident occurred around 4:18 p.m. on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at the intersection of West U.S. Highway 90 and Elizabeth Sims Loop.
According to investigators, a 32-year-old woman was driving a sedan with her two young passengers — girls aged 5 and 9 — when she failed to maintain a single lane of travel. The sedan veered off the road into the grass before crossing the eastbound lane of Highway 90 and colliding violently with a tree.
The impact was so severe that the vehicle was described as being “cut in half.”
Sadly, the 9-year-old passenger died at the scene. The 5-year-old girl sustained critical injuries and was airlifted to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, while the driver was transported by ground with serious injuries.
Legal and Safety Considerations
Crashes involving children are particularly heartbreaking, and this case raises questions about both driver responsibility and vehicle safety. According to FHP, the initial cause was the driver’s failure to remain within her lane. However, investigators will also look at other possible contributing factors, including:
- Speed at the time of the crash
- Road conditions on U.S. Highway 90
- Whether the children were properly restrained in seat belts or car seats
- Potential vehicle defects or maintenance issues
In Florida, when passengers are injured or killed in a car driven by a family member or acquaintance, they may still have a legal right to pursue claims through the driver’s insurance policy. This can include recovery for medical bills, long-term care needs, funeral costs, and non-economic damages such as pain and suffering.
Families of child victims may also have grounds for a wrongful death claim, which provides financial compensation for the profound loss of companionship, love, and support.
In crashes like this one, families often face overwhelming medical expenses, emotional trauma, and long-term consequences. Consulting with an experienced wrongful death and personal injury attorney can ensure that evidence is preserved, insurance coverage is fully explored, and those affected receive the support they deserve.
