Tragic Wakulla County Crash Claims Lives of Mother and Teen Passenger
A devastating car accident on Friday evening, July 4, 2025, has now claimed the lives of two people in Wakulla County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP). The collision occurred at approximately 6:18 p.m. at the intersection of Port Leon Drive and Coastal Highway (U.S. 98).
Authorities confirm that a Toyota Prius carrying two occupants — a 50-year-old woman and her 15-year-old passenger, both from Crawfordville — failed to yield the right of way at the intersection. The vehicle was subsequently struck by a Ford pickup truck towing a boat on Coastal Highway.
Crash Details
- 6:18 PM – July 4, 2025: A Toyota Prius traveling on Port Leon Drive entered the intersection with Coastal Highway, failing to yield to oncoming traffic.
- A Ford pickup truck hauling a boat, traveling along Coastal Highway, collided with the Prius.
- The 15-year-old passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.
- The driver of the Prius was transported to a local hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
- Four individuals inside the pickup truck did not suffer any reported injuries, according to FHP.
The victims, whose names have not been publicly released, were reportedly residents of Crawfordville, a small community in Wakulla County. News of the fatal crash has sent shockwaves through the town, particularly as it occurred during the Fourth of July holiday weekend—a time when families gather in celebration.
Failing to yield the right of way is a leading cause of fatal traffic crashes, particularly at uncontrolled or rural intersections like the one at Port Leon Drive and Coastal Highway.
Under Florida Statute § 316.121, drivers approaching an intersection are legally required to yield to vehicles already traveling on the through highway. A failure to do so can result in serious or fatal crashes, especially when high-speed or commercial vehicles are involved.
Legal Options After a Fatal Crash
When a crash results in death, especially involving teenagers or children, families often face not only overwhelming grief but also serious financial burdens such as funeral costs, medical bills, and lost income.
The surviving family members of the deceased may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim under The Florida Wrongful Death Act. This civil action allows designated family members to recover compensation if the death was caused by the wrongful act or negligence of another party.
In this case, although the Prius driver failed to yield, investigators will still examine:
- Whether speeding or distraction was a factor for the truck driver.
- Whether visibility issues or road signage were inadequate.
- The maintenance and condition of the vehicles involved.
- Any potential mechanical failures or roadway hazards.
