One Killed in Fatal Crash on I-75 in Weston, Florida: FHP Investigating

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A tragic crash on Interstate 75 in Weston claimed the life of one person on Sunday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP). According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) and confirmed by police at the scene, the fatal crash involved an Amazon tractor trailer and led to significant delays on one of South Florida’s busiest roadways.

The crash occurred just before 7:00 a.m. near mile marker 19 on I-75, in the southbound lanes near Weston. Florida Highway Patrol troopers responded to reports of a serious collision, and upon arrival, confirmed that a pedestrian had been struck and killed by an Amazon semi-truck.

Footage from the scene captured a yellow tarp covering what appeared to be a body near the roadway, which is a standard procedure following confirmed fatalities. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased, pending notification of next of kin.

The Florida Highway Patrol is still investigating the circumstances that led to the pedestrian being on the highway. It remains unclear whether the victim was a stranded driver, a worker, or someone who entered the roadway under other circumstances.

I-75 in Weston, particularly near mile marker 19, is a heavily trafficked stretch of road, serving as a key connector for commuters, commercial drivers, and travelers. While troopers have not confirmed the cause of this particular accident, this corridor has seen a number of serious crashes in recent years due to:

  • High speeds
  • Merging traffic near interchanges
  • Limited visibility during certain times of day
  • Inattentive or impaired drivers

Authorities continue to urge all drivers to obey posted speed limits, avoid distractions, and remain alert behind the wheel.

When a fatal crash involves a commercial vehicle, especially one operated by a major corporation like Amazon, it raises serious questions about liability, compliance with federal transportation safety regulations, and whether negligence played a role in the death.

Can Amazon Be Held Liable?

Under Florida law, companies may be held liable for the negligence of their drivers while operating in the scope of their employment. Even though Amazon frequently contracts with third-party delivery services, the company may still share legal responsibility if:

  • The driver was an Amazon employee or contractor
  • The vehicle was owned or leased by Amazon
  • Amazon failed to ensure safe hiring or proper training
  • There was negligence in maintenance, scheduling, or driver oversight

If a pedestrian was killed due to the actions of a commercial truck driver—whether through inattentive driving, speeding, or failure to maintain control—there may be grounds for a wrongful death lawsuit.

What Is a Wrongful Death Claim?

Under Florida Statute § 768.19, a wrongful death occurs when a person’s death is caused by the wrongful act, negligence, or breach of duty by another party.

A wrongful death claim must be brought by the personal representative of the deceased’s estate, on behalf of surviving family members, which may include:

  • Spouse
  • Children
  • Parents
  • Other blood relatives or adoptive siblings who were dependent on the deceased

What To Do If a Loved One Dies in a Crash

If your loved one has died in a car accident on a Florida highway, here are the recommended steps to protect your rights:

  1. Get the Official Accident Report – This will provide preliminary facts and may identify the party at fault.
  2. Preserve Evidence – If you have photographs, dashcam footage, or witness contact information, keep it safe.
  3. Avoid Giving Recorded Statements – Insurance companies may contact you quickly. Speak to a lawyer before giving any official statements.
  4. Consult an Experienced Wrongful Death Attorney – A knowledgeable lawyer can evaluate the merits of your case and help you pursue compensation.

Trucking accident cases are more complex than ordinary car accident claims. They involve:

  • Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR)
  • Commercial insurance policies
  • Corporate legal teams and defense firms
  • Onboard computer and GPS data (black box evidence)
  • Employment contracts and liability waivers
