Orlando Man Killed in Motorcycle Crash Near Orlando International Airport
A 50-year-old Orlando man was killed Wednesday evening after his motorcycle collided with an SUV near Orlando International Airport (MCO), according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
The fatal crash happened around 6:20 p.m. on Wetherbee Road near Airport Park Drive. Troopers reported that the motorcyclist was traveling westbound on Wetherbee Road when a 2014 Nissan Rogue, driven by a 60-year-old Orlando woman, was heading east and attempted to make a left turn onto Airport Park Drive.
In an effort to avoid the SUV, the rider tried to switch lanes. Despite the evasive maneuver, the right side of the Nissan collided with the front of the motorcycle, causing the rider to be thrown from his bike.
The motorcyclist was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The driver of the Nissan sustained only minor injuries, FHP confirmed.
Authorities have not released the identity of the victim pending family notification. The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and it has not yet been determined whether charges will be filed against the SUV’s driver.
The intersection of Wetherbee Road and Airport Park Drive, located near one of Orlando’s busiest travel corridors, was shut down for several hours following the crash.
Legal Perspective: Could There Be a Wrongful Death Claim?
In collisions like this, liability often hinges on right-of-way laws. If the investigation confirms that the SUV driver failed to yield while making a left turn, the victim’s family could pursue a wrongful death claim under Florida law.
Such a claim may seek compensation for:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Loss of companionship and support for surviving family members
- Medical expenses incurred before death
- Pain and suffering
The claim would typically be filed against the at-fault driver and their insurance company. In some cases, additional claims may arise if roadway conditions or visibility contributed to the accident.
This tragic crash highlights the vulnerability of motorcyclists in Florida, a state that consistently ranks among the highest in motorcycle fatalities nationwide. Intersections, where vehicles frequently turn across traffic, are particularly dangerous for riders.
The loss of this Orlando rider is a heartbreaking reminder of the risks motorcyclists face daily. While the official investigation will determine fault, families impacted by such crashes often need legal guidance to secure accountability and compensation.
