One Killed, Two Seriously Injured in Four-Vehicle Crash on I-95 Exit Ramp in Volusia County

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A tragic crash on Interstate 95 near the exit ramp to Interstate 4 in Volusia County left one woman dead and two others seriously injured Tuesday night, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).

The crash occurred just before 9 p.m. at mile marker 260, on the busy interchange where I-95 and I-4 meet.

According to the FHP report, the incident began when a 20-year-old DeLand man driving a 2001 Ford Mustang changed lanes and collided with the right side of a 2012 Dodge Charger. Both vehicles crossed the travel lanes, and the Charger eventually struck a guardrail.

Meanwhile, a 2024 International truck and a semi-tractor-trailer were traveling west on the I-4 exit ramp toward I-95. The International truck struck the back of the Mustang, pushing it into a guardrail. In an attempt to avoid hitting the Charger, the semi swerved but still collided with the Mustang.

The passenger of the Mustang, a 34-year-old woman from Deltona, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.

The Mustang’s driver was transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the Dodge Charger, a 48-year-old Daytona Beach woman, was also hospitalized with serious injuries.

The drivers of the International truck and the semi were not injured and remained at the scene.

Troopers are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the multi-vehicle collision, including whether speed, driver distraction, or other factors may have played a role. Traffic on the interchange was slowed for several hours Tuesday night as investigators worked to document the scene and clear debris.

Four-vehicle crashes like this highlight how quickly a single driving error can escalate into a chain-reaction collision, especially on high-speed roadways like I-95 and I-4.

Potential liability in this case could include:

  • The Mustang driver, for initiating the collision by changing lanes unsafely.
  • The semi and truck drivers may not face liability if they were acting reasonably to avoid further crashes.
  • If roadway design, signage, or lighting issues contributed, government agencies could also be reviewed for responsibility.

For surviving victims and the family of the deceased, a personal injury or wrongful death claim may help recover damages such as medical bills, lost wages, funeral expenses, and pain and suffering. Because multiple vehicles and insurance carriers are involved, claims may become complex and require careful investigation of fault percentages.

The fatal crash on I-95 near the I-4 exit ramp is a sobering reminder of how dangerous highway interchanges can be, particularly at night. As investigators continue their work, families and victims are left coping with loss and injury.

Anyone affected by a crash of this magnitude should consider consulting an experienced Florida accident attorney to better understand their rights and potential avenues for recovery.
