FHP Searching for Multiple Vehicles Involved in Fatal Hit-and-Run Crash on U.S. 92 in Volusia County

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) is asking for the public’s help in locating several vehicles involved in a tragic hit-and-run crash that left a pedestrian dead early Sunday morning in Volusia County.

The incident occurred around midnight on U.S. Highway 92 (International Speedway Boulevard) just east of Calle Alto Vista, near the DeLand Municipal Airport, according to officials.

Investigators say a 54-year-old Deltona man was walking northbound across the westbound lanes of U.S. 92 when he was struck by the left side mirror of a passing vehicle. The impact caused the man to fall onto the roadway, where he was subsequently hit by multiple other vehicles, all of which fled the scene.

Tragically, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities say the drivers involved failed to stop, render aid, or report the collision as required under Florida law. The Florida Highway Patrol is now actively searching for the vehicles and drivers involved in the deadly crash.

Anyone with information about the crash or the vehicles involved is urged to contact *FHP at 347 or Crimeline at 1-800-423-TIPS (8477).

Under Florida Statute §316.062, any driver involved in a crash that results in injury or death must immediately stop and remain at the scene to render reasonable assistance, such as calling for medical help and providing identification to law enforcement.

Failing to stop and assist after a fatal crash is considered Hit-and-Run Involving Death, a first-degree felony under Florida Statute §316.027, punishable by up to 30 years in prison, heavy fines, and permanent revocation of the offender’s driver’s license.

Unfortunately, hit-and-run cases are on the rise across Florida. According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), there were more than 100,000 hit-and-run crashes statewide in 2024, resulting in over 1,000 fatalities.

Crashes involving multiple vehicles and pedestrians, such as this one in Volusia County, often require extensive investigation. FHP investigators must:

  • Analyze surveillance footage from nearby businesses or traffic cameras.
  • Review vehicle debris, such as broken mirrors, headlights, or paint transfer, to identify makes and models.
  • Collect forensic evidence like tire marks or skid patterns.
  • Interview witnesses and first responders.

When multiple drivers leave the scene, determining fault becomes even more complicated. In cases like this, every vehicle that made contact with the pedestrian — and failed to stop — may face serious criminal and civil consequences.

Losing a loved one in a hit-and-run crash is an unimaginable tragedy. In addition to the criminal investigation, surviving family members may be eligible to file a wrongful death claim under the Florida Wrongful Death Act (§§768.16–768.26).

A wrongful death lawsuit can help recover compensation for:

  • Funeral and burial expenses
  • Medical bills incurred prior to death
  • Loss of income and future financial support
  • Pain and suffering for surviving family members
  • Loss of companionship and protection

Even if the at-fault driver has not yet been identified, families may still have legal recourse through:

  1. Uninsured Motorist (UM) Coverage: This coverage, if included in the victim’s or their family’s insurance policy, can provide compensation when the at-fault driver flees or lacks insurance.
  2. Crime Victim Compensation Fund: Administered by the Florida Attorney General’s Office, this fund can help victims and families with out-of-pocket expenses after a violent crime, including fatal hit-and-run cases.

An experienced attorney can help families navigate these options while law enforcement continues its investigation.

Steps to Take After a Fatal Hit-and-Run Accident

If your loved one was involved in a fatal hit-and-run crash, here are the steps you should take to protect your family’s rights:

1. Contact Law Enforcement Immediately

Always file a police report. Detailed documentation from FHP or local authorities will be crucial in identifying the responsible driver and pursuing legal claims.

2. Gather Any Available Evidence

If possible, preserve any evidence related to the crash, such as witness contact information, dashcam footage, or photographs of the scene. This information can be vital for both the criminal and civil cases.

3. Consult a Florida Wrongful Death Attorney

These cases often involve complex insurance disputes and lengthy investigations. A wrongful death lawyer can help you understand your rights, manage communication with insurers, and pursue every available avenue for compensation.

4. Don’t Delay—Florida Has Strict Time Limits

Under Florida Statute §95.11(4)(d), families generally have two years from the date of death to file a wrongful death claim. However, in hit-and-run cases where the at-fault driver is unknown, the investigation may extend this timeline in certain circumstances.
