Deputies Rescue Two After Hit-and-Run Crash Plunges Car Into Martin County Canal
Two people are recovering after a harrowing crash sent their vehicle plunging into a canal in Martin County, in what authorities are calling a miraculous rescue by two sheriff’s deputies.
The terrifying hit-and-run incident, which occurred late on September 12, was captured on video and has since gone viral, showing the bravery of deputies who risked their lives to save the trapped victims.
According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), the victims were traveling eastbound on Martin Highway (State Road 714) when another car struck them and immediately fled the scene.
The impact forced the victims’ vehicle off the road and into a deep, water-filled embankment. Within moments, the car was fully submerged, trapping both occupants inside.
The victims managed to dial 911, but their call was cut off before they could provide their exact location. This made locating them on the dark, rural stretch of highway extremely difficult.
Deputies Matt Fritchie and Juan Pepper-Orelliana were dispatched to the area and began searching for the vehicle. From the roadway, the submerged car was not visible.
In a stroke of quick thinking, Deputy Fritchie rolled down his patrol car window and listened closely. The faint sound of a car horn coming from the embankment guided them to the crash site.
Without hesitation, both deputies jumped into the canal, smashed into the vehicle, and pulled the victims to safety.
Video released by the sheriff’s office shows the intensity of the moment. The car horn can be heard blaring as deputies worked to free the victims.
Both victims were rushed to a local hospital with injuries. Their current conditions have not yet been released.
The hit-and-run driver fled the scene and has not yet been identified. Investigators are continuing to gather evidence and are asking anyone with information to come forward.
Leaving the scene of a crash with injuries is a felony offense in Florida, punishable by serious criminal charges, including prison time.
Legal Considerations After a Hit-and-Run
Victims of hit-and-run accidents often face devastating injuries and unexpected financial burdens. In this case, the victims may have several legal options, including:
- Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage: If the at-fault driver is never found, the victims’ own insurance may provide compensation through UM/UIM coverage.
- Personal Injury Claim: If the driver is identified, the victims could pursue a personal injury claim for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and long-term care.
- Potential Criminal Restitution: If the suspect is caught and convicted, the court may also order restitution to help cover damages.
An experienced personal injury attorney can investigate insurance coverage, preserve evidence, and ensure victims receive the compensation they deserve
This terrifying crash in Martin County could have ended in tragedy if not for the heroic actions of Deputies Fritchie and Pepper-Orelliana. Their courage highlights the critical role first responders play in protecting lives.
Meanwhile, investigators continue searching for the hit-and-run driver responsible for causing this wreck. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Martin County Sheriff’s Office immediately.
