A tragic drowning in Port Charlotte has claimed the life of a child, highlighting Florida’s ongoing struggle with preventable water-related deaths. According to authorities, the incident occurred on April 1, 2026, at a home on Conreid Drive, where first responders were called to a reported drowning just after 11:15 a.m.

What We Know About the Incident

The drowning occurred at a residence on Conreid Drive in Port Charlotte, Florida

Emergency crews responded just after 11:15 a.m. on April 1, 2026

Charlotte County deputies and Fire & EMS arrived at the scene

CPR was already in progress when first responders arrived

Advanced life-saving measures were performed

The child was pronounced deceased

Authorities have not released the child’s identity

The home is believed to be used as a vacation rental

Neighbors reported they did not recognize the family staying at the property

The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident

A Growing Concern in Florida

This tragedy comes amid alarming statistics regarding child drownings across Florida. According to state data:

Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death for children ages 1 to 4 in Florida

Florida has the highest child drowning rate in the nation

More than 100 children drowned in Florida in 2025 alone

These incidents often occur quickly and silently, sometimes within minutes, making prevention efforts critical.

Legislative Efforts to Prevent Child Drownings

In response to the ongoing crisis, Florida lawmakers have introduced several bills aimed at improving water safety and preventing future tragedies:

Senate Bill 428: Expands the state’s swimming lesson voucher program to include children ages 1 through 7 and requires drowning prevention education for new parents through hospitals and caregivers.

Senate Bill 606 / House Bill 503: Focused on requiring the Florida Department of Health to provide drowning prevention education. While SB 606 did not pass independently, its language was incorporated into other legislation.

House Bill 117: Proposed stronger residential pool safety requirements tied to home sales but did not pass.

Senate Bill 658: Targeted short-term and vacation rental properties by requiring safety measures such as pool barriers, alarms, and self-latching doors. The bill passed the Senate but stalled in the House.

Lawmakers have emphasized that many drowning incidents occur in rental properties, where safety features may not be consistent or properly enforced.

Risks and Safety Concerns

Drownings involving young children often occur in residential settings, including private homes and vacation rentals. Factors that increase risk include:

Lack of pool barriers or fencing

Unsecured access to pools or water features

Absence of alarms or safety devices

Limited supervision or momentary lapses in attention

Children can drown in a matter of minutes, often without splashing or noise, making constant supervision and safety measures essential.

Vacation rental properties present additional risks, as families may be unfamiliar with the layout or unaware of potential hazards.

Legal Options and Potential Liability

In drowning cases, liability may arise if negligence or unsafe conditions contributed to the incident.

Potential liable parties may include:

Property owners: Owners of homes or rental properties may be held liable if proper safety measures, such as pool barriers or alarms, were not in place.

Property management companies: Companies managing vacation rentals may share responsibility for failing to maintain safe conditions or disclose hazards.

Third parties: If another party’s actions contributed to unsafe conditions or lack of supervision, they may be held liable.

Manufacturers: If a defective safety device, such as a pool alarm or gate, failed to function properly, a product liability claim may be pursued.

Florida law places a strong emphasis on protecting children from foreseeable dangers, particularly around pools and bodies of water.

Families may be entitled to pursue compensation for:

Funeral and burial expenses

Medical costs incurred prior to death

Loss of companionship and emotional suffering

Investigation Ongoing

The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the drowning. Officials have not released additional details at this time.

This tragic incident underscores the urgent need for stronger safety measures and awareness to prevent child drownings across Florida.

Authorities are searching for a driver involved in a deadly hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian early Friday morning in Miami.

According to the Miami Police Department, the crash occurred shortly before 3:30 a.m. on March 13, 2026, near the intersection of Northwest 12th Avenue and Northwest 28th Street in Miami, Florida.

The incident was captured on surveillance cameras in the area, and investigators are asking for the public’s help in locating the driver responsible.

According to police, a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle near a gas station in the area during the early morning hours.

Surveillance footage reportedly shows an SUV striking the pedestrian and continuing to drive away without stopping.

Emergency responders from the Miami Fire Rescue arrived at the scene and transported the victim to **Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital for emergency treatment.

Despite lifesaving efforts, the victim later died from his injuries at the hospital.

Authorities have identified the victim as 62-year-old Antonio Sanchez.

Investigators say the vehicle involved in the crash is believed to be a tan or gold SUV with front-end damage.

Detectives are actively searching for the driver and are urging anyone who may have seen the vehicle or has information about the crash to come forward.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.

Stop immediately at the scene

Provide aid to injured individuals

Contact law enforcement

Leaving the scene of a crash involving death is considered a serious felony offense in Florida and can result in significant prison time and license revocation.

Unfortunately, hit-and-run crashes can make investigations more difficult and delay justice for victims and their families.

Legal Options for Families After Fatal Pedestrian Accidents

When a pedestrian is killed due to a negligent driver, surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim under Florida law.

Civil claims may allow families to recover compensation for:

Funeral and burial expenses

Medical bills incurred before death

Loss of companionship and emotional suffering

Loss of financial support

Even when the driver initially flees the scene, civil claims may still be pursued once the responsible party is identified.

The Miami Police Department continues to investigate the fatal hit-and-run crash that killed Antonio Sanchez near Northwest 12th Avenue and Northwest 28th Street.

Authorities urge anyone with information to contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers.

The victim was found deceased with an apparent gunshot wound

The shooting occurred following an argument or altercation

All individuals believed to be involved in the incident have been identified

However, no arrests have been announced at this time.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the victim or additional information about the individuals involved in the altercation.

Investigators are continuing to gather evidence and determine the circumstances leading up to the shooting.

Law enforcement has also not disclosed whether the shooting may have involved:

Self-defense

A dispute between acquaintances

Domestic violence

Criminal activity within the apartment complex

These details will likely become clearer as the investigation progresses.

Violent Incidents in Apartment Complexes

Shootings in apartment communities can occur during disputes between residents, visitors, or acquaintances.

Common situations that may escalate into violence include:

Personal conflicts or arguments

Domestic disputes

Criminal activity or drug-related conflicts

Ongoing tensions between neighbors or acquaintances

When violence occurs in residential communities, it often raises concerns about property security, safety policies, and adequate management oversight.

Potential Liability in Apartment Complex Shootings

While criminal acts are typically the responsibility of the individual involved, apartment complexes may sometimes face legal scrutiny if negligent security contributed to the incident.

Under Florida law, property owners and landlords have a duty to maintain reasonably safe premises for tenants and visitors.

Potential issues that may lead to liability include:

Lack of security cameras or surveillance systems

Poor lighting in parking lots or walkways

Broken gates or unsecured entry points

Failure to address known criminal activity on the property

Lack of security personnel in high-crime areas

If property owners fail to take reasonable steps to protect residents from foreseeable criminal activity, injured victims or their families may have grounds for a negligent security claim.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the fatal shooting at the Lakewood Place apartment complex on Lake Chapman Drive.

Authorities have not announced whether criminal charges will be filed.

As investigators gather more information, additional details about the incident and those involved may be released.

Legal Options for Families After Fatal Violence

Families who lose loved ones in acts of violence may have the right to pursue wrongful death claims if negligence by a property owner, security provider, or other third party contributed to the tragedy.

A 4-year-old girl tragically died Thursday after she was found unresponsive in a residential swimming pool in northeast Miami-Dade County, according to authorities.

The incident occurred in the 20200 block of Northeast 15th Avenue, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.

Officials reported that the child was discovered at the bottom of a swimming pool at the residence.

Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and transported the child to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Despite lifesaving efforts, the child was later pronounced dead.

Authorities have not released the identity of the child or additional details about how the drowning occurred.

The incident remains under investigation.

Drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death for young children in Florida.

Because Florida has a large number of residential swimming pools, child drownings can occur quickly if proper safety measures are not in place.

Risk factors that often contribute to drowning incidents include:

Lack of pool barriers or fencing

Unsecured pool gates

Lack of adult supervision

Inadequate pool alarms or safety devices

Children gaining unsupervised access to the pool area

Young children can drown silently in just a matter of minutes, making prevention measures critically important.

Florida Pool Safety Laws

Florida has enacted several laws designed to help prevent child drownings, including the Florida Residential Swimming Pool Safety Act.

Under this law, residential pools are generally required to have at least one safety feature such as:

A barrier or fence surrounding the pool

Self-closing and self-latching gates

Pool alarms on doors and windows leading to the pool area

Safety pool covers

Failure to maintain proper pool safety measures may expose property owners to liability if a child is injured or killed.

Potential Liability in Drowning Cases

In some cases, drowning incidents may involve premises liability or negligent supervision.

Property owners, landlords, or homeowners associations may be held responsible if they failed to maintain reasonable safety precautions to prevent access to the pool.

Families may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim if negligence contributed to the tragedy.

Compensation in these cases may include:

Funeral and burial expenses

Medical costs related to emergency treatment

Emotional pain and suffering

Other damages allowed under Florida law

These cases often require a thorough investigation into pool safety measures, property conditions, and supervision at the time of the incident.

Authorities continue to investigate the drowning death of the 4-year-old girl in northeast Miami-Dade.

Quick action by police officers helped a resident escape a burning duplex in St. Petersburg Wednesday morning before firefighters arrived at the scene, according to local authorities.

Crews with St. Petersburg Fire Rescue responded to a structure fire at a one-story duplex around 9:30 a.m.

According to officials, when first responders arrived at the scene they observed heavy smoke and flames coming from the building.

Before firefighters reached the location, officers with the St. Petersburg Police Department assisted one occupant in escaping the burning structure through a window.

Emergency crews were able to evacuate all four adult residents from the duplex.

Firefighters launched an aggressive interior attack on the fire and successfully prevented the flames from spreading to a nearby home.

Two individuals were transported to a local hospital for further medical evaluation.

Fire crews remained at the scene after extinguishing the flames to conduct overhaul operations, which involve checking for hidden hotspots to prevent the fire from reigniting.

A house fire in Lakeland turned deadly Tuesday morning after firefighters discovered one person deceased inside the home while another individual was transported to a hospital, according to the Polk County Fire Rescue.

The fire occurred at a residence off Ralph Road and prompted a rapid emergency response from local fire crews.

Fire officials say crews were dispatched to the scene at approximately 9:48 a.m.

When firefighters arrived, they found flames spreading through multiple rooms inside the home.

Outside the residence, first responders located one individual who was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

As crews continued extinguishing the fire and searching the structure, they learned that another person was believed to still be inside the home.

Firefighters conducted a search while battling the blaze and eventually located the victim inside the residence. That individual was pronounced dead at the scene.

The fire was brought under control by 10:29 a.m. During the response, one firefighter was also injured. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims or the cause of the fire.

Polk County Fire Rescue Fire Chief Shawn Smith addressed the tragedy in a statement.

“These scenes are difficult for everyone involved. Our crews moved quickly to put out the fire and locate any individuals still inside the home,” Smith said. “We offer our condolences to the victim’s family and hope for a quick recovery for the individual transported from the scene.”

Investigators will continue examining the property to determine what caused the fire.

Potential Causes of Residential Fires

Residential fires can start for many reasons, including:

Electrical malfunctions

Faulty appliances or wiring

Cooking-related fires

Heating equipment failures

Smoking materials

Improperly stored flammable materials

Investigators typically examine burn patterns, electrical systems, and potential ignition sources to determine the origin of the fire.

Potential Liability in Fatal House Fires

While some residential fires are accidental, others may involve negligence or defective products that contribute to the tragedy.

Potential legal liability may arise if the fire was caused by:

Defective appliances or electrical components

Faulty wiring or unsafe construction

Landlord negligence in maintaining rental property

Lack of working smoke detectors

Unsafe heating equipment

In cases involving rental homes or apartments, property owners may have a legal obligation to maintain safe living conditions and ensure that smoke detectors and other safety systems are functional.

Legal Options for Victims and Families

When negligence contributes to a fatal fire, surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim under Florida law.

Compensation in these cases may include:

Funeral and burial expenses

Medical costs for injured victims

Loss of financial support

Loss of companionship and protection

Emotional pain and suffering

Investigating fatal fire cases often requires cooperation with fire investigators, engineers, and safety experts to determine how the fire started and whether it could have been prevented.

Cocoa Shooting Suspect Arrested; Investigators Examine Potential Liability for Apartment Complex Shooting

A South Florida man is facing multiple felony charges after authorities say a violent multi-county shooting spree left two people dead and another injured in a single day. The suspect’s arrest in Cocoa has also raised questions about potential civil liability for property owners when violent incidents occur at apartment complexes and other residential properties.

According to Cocoa police, Dennard Barnes was arrested Friday night following a shooting at an apartment complex off Clearlake Road.

Investigators say Barnes allegedly shot a man in the stomach at the complex, leaving the victim seriously injured but alive. After the shooting, police attempted to stop Barnes as he fled in a white van. Authorities say he returned to the scene and drove toward officers, forcing them to jump out of the way to avoid being struck.

A K-9 unit was deployed, and Barnes was taken into custody. He now faces 16 felony charges and three misdemeanor charges, including attempted murder, and is being held without bond.

Suspect Linked to Two Earlier Fatal Shootings

Authorities in South Florida are also investigating Barnes’ possible connection to two earlier fatal shootings that occurred the same day:

A deadly shooting in Miami Gardens

A second fatal shooting in North Miami

Police believe the suspect may have known the victims, though a motive has not yet been confirmed. The investigation remains active across multiple jurisdictions.

Potential Liability for Apartment Complex Owners After Violent Crimes

When shootings or other violent crimes occur at apartment complexes, injured victims and their families often have questions about whether the property owner or management company could share legal responsibility.

While the criminal case focuses on prosecuting the suspect, civil liability may arise if the property owner failed to take reasonable steps to keep residents and visitors safe.

Negligent Security Claims in Florida

Under Florida law, apartment complexes and other commercial property owners have a legal duty to maintain reasonably safe premises. This includes taking appropriate security measures when there is a foreseeable risk of crime.

A negligent security claim may arise if:

The property had a history of violent crime or similar incidents

Management failed to provide adequate lighting, gates, cameras, or security patrols

Broken locks, gates, or access points allowed unauthorized entry

There was insufficient response to known safety concerns from residents

If it can be shown that proper security measures could have prevented or reduced the likelihood of the shooting, the property owner or management company may face liability for resulting injuries or deaths.

Foreseeability Is a Key Factor

In Florida negligent security cases, foreseeability plays a central role. Courts often examine whether prior criminal activity occurred on or near the property and whether management took reasonable steps to address known risks.

For example, if an apartment complex had previous incidents involving weapons, assaults, or unauthorized access but failed to implement security improvements, liability may be more likely.

Compensation for Victims and Families

Victims of apartment complex shootings — or families who lost loved ones — may be entitled to pursue compensation through civil claims separate from any criminal prosecution. Potential damages can include:

Medical expenses

Lost income and future earnings

Pain and suffering

Funeral and burial costs

Wrongful death damages for surviving family members

These claims can be brought even while criminal proceedings are ongoing.

Investigation Continues

The shooting investigations across Brevard County and South Florida remain ongoing as authorities work to determine the full timeline and motive behind the incidents.

As more details emerge, questions surrounding property safety, security measures, and potential civil liability may become central to the case — particularly for victims injured at residential or commercial properties where adequate security may have prevented harm.

A sudden deck collapse at a vacation rental home in St. Johns County left eight people hospitalized and raised serious questions about property maintenance and rental safety, officials said.

The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. Sunday at a home along South Ponte Vedra Boulevard, near Jacksonville. Emergency crews from St. Johns County Fire Rescue responded quickly after reports that a two-story deck had collapsed while multiple people were on or near the structure.

Fire rescue officials confirmed that 13 people were evaluated at the scene, and eight were transported to local hospitals for treatment. Fortunately:

No one was trapped beneath the debris

No rescues were required

All victims were able to be accessed quickly by first responders

“We evaluated a total of 13 patients on scene and ended up transporting eight of them,” said Chris Naff, spokesperson for St. Johns County Fire Rescue.

Authorities did not immediately release the severity of the injuries, but officials said the victims were conscious and receiving medical care.

Crime scene tape surrounded the rental property as investigators worked to determine what caused the deck to fail. Nearby residents expressed shock — and concern — over the safety of frequently rented homes in the area.

“We weren’t sure what happened, so to hear that the deck collapsed is pretty insane,” said nearby homeowner Nicholas Recco.

Another neighbor raised concerns about maintenance practices at short-term rental properties.

“That house is rented quite a bit,” said Frank Recco. “A lot of these houses are not maintained. I guess that’s the problem with a lot of these rental properties.”

Officials have not yet released details about:

The age or condition of the deck

Whether the structure complied with building codes

If overcrowding or structural defects played a role

Whether the property owner or management company could face liability

Investigators are expected to examine construction records, inspection history, and whether the deck was properly maintained — especially given the property’s use as a vacation rental.

Potential Legal Options for Injured Guests

Victims injured in a deck collapse at a rental property may have legal rights depending on the findings of the investigation. Potential claims may include:

Premises liability against the property owner for unsafe conditions

Negligence claims if routine inspections or maintenance were neglected

Claims against property management companies responsible for upkeep

Construction defect claims if the deck was improperly built or repaired

Injured guests may be entitled to compensation for:

Medical expenses

Lost wages

Pain and suffering

Long-term rehabilitation or disability

A Reminder About Rental Property Safety

This incident underscores the importance of structural safety and regular inspections, particularly at short-term rental properties that frequently host large groups. Elevated decks, balconies, and staircases are known risk areas when maintenance is deferred or building standards are ignored.

As the investigation continues, authorities are expected to release more information about the cause of the collapse and whether violations contributed to the injuries.

An investigation is underway after a woman reported being sexually battered on the campus of Florida Memorial University (FMU) in Miami Gardens, according to local police. The incident has raised serious concerns about campus safety and security, prompting an increased law enforcement presence and renewed discussions about preventative measures.

According to the Miami Gardens Police Department, the incident occurred on Sunday while the victim was waiting at a bus stop near the FMU campus. The woman told officers that an unknown man began whistling at her while she waited.

Feeling uncomfortable, the victim left the bus stop and walked back toward campus to return to her dormitory. Police say the suspect followed her, and at one point pinned her against a building door and sexually battered her before fleeing the area.

Police described the suspect as a Black male, approximately six feet tall, wearing a black hoodie and black pants. As of the latest update, the suspect has not been identified or apprehended.

The report has shaken the FMU student body. Several students expressed concern over how the suspect was able to access the campus and whether additional safety measures could have prevented the attack.

In response, Florida Memorial University President William McCormick released a statement emphasizing that the school takes the matter seriously and has heightened both internal and external security protocols. The university is also working closely with law enforcement and providing updates to the campus community as appropriate.

Miami Gardens Police confirmed they have increased high-visibility patrols in the area and offered additional resources to support campus safety while the investigation continues.

Potential Legal Options for the Victim

In addition to the criminal investigation, victims of sexual battery may have civil legal options available to them, depending on the circumstances surrounding the attack. These options can exist even if the suspect is not immediately identified or arrested.

If evidence shows that reasonable security measures were lacking, the victim may have grounds to pursue a claim against parties responsible for campus safety. This could include:

Inadequate lighting

Insufficient security patrols

Broken or unsecured access points

Failure to monitor or control access to campus housing areas

Colleges and universities have a legal duty to take reasonable steps to protect students from foreseeable harm, especially in residential and high-traffic areas.

Police urge anyone with information about the incident to contact the Miami Gardens Police Department’s Special Victims Unit or submit an anonymous tip through Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.

Survivors of sexual violence are also encouraged to seek confidential support through counseling services, victim advocacy organizations, or trusted campus resources.

Sexual battery is a devastating crime that can have lasting emotional and physical effects. As the investigation continues, questions remain about how the suspect accessed campus grounds and what additional safety measures may be necessary to protect students and staff.

Victims deserve not only justice through the criminal system but also accountability where preventable failures may have contributed to their harm. Anyone affected by similar incidents may benefit from understanding their rights and exploring all available legal and support options.

A large police presence flooded a busy area of Davie on Tuesday afternoon following a shooting that left at least one person injured near multiple schools, authorities confirmed.

The incident occurred in the 4100 block of South University Drive, outside the Aveda Institute, a cosmetology school, and Know-It-All Preparatory School, located next door. Davie Police officers, along with other law enforcement agencies, responded quickly to the scene after reports of gunfire.

Davie Police acknowledged responding to a shooting in the area but stated that they were not searching for any suspects, suggesting there was no ongoing threat to the public.

Davie Fire Rescue officials said one person was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The individual’s condition has not been released.

At the scene, officers closed off part of the Aveda Institute parking lot using crime scene tape as investigators worked to secure and process the area.

Authorities were seen examining a white vehicle at the scene that appeared to have possible bullet holes. Investigators also appeared to be checking what looked like a person inside the passenger seat of the vehicle, though officials have not confirmed whether that individual was injured or deceased.

Due to the proximity to schools, St. David Catholic School was placed on lockdown as a precaution while law enforcement assessed the situation. The lockdown was part of standard safety procedures during an active police investigation nearby.

As of the latest update, police have not released information regarding:

The identity of the victim

What led up to the shooting

Whether the incident was targeted or random

The condition of any additional individuals involved

Authorities have urged the public to avoid the area of South University Drive while the investigation continues.

Legal Considerations After a Shooting

Shootings in public or commercial areas can raise serious public safety and legal concerns, especially when they occur near schools or businesses. Victims of gun violence may face long-term medical care, emotional trauma, lost income, and other life-altering consequences.

In some cases, injured victims or their families may have civil legal options in addition to any criminal case, depending on the circumstances. These may include claims related to negligent security, premises liability, or other failures to provide reasonable safety measures in high-risk areas.

As investigators continue working to determine what happened in Davie, more details are expected to be released. Anyone impacted by this incident or similar acts of violence may benefit from learning more about their legal rights and available avenues for recovery.

A tragic and disturbing shooting near Walt Disney World has left three tourists dead and a Kissimmee man facing multiple murder charges. Authorities say the victims were visiting Central Florida and staying at a short-term rental when the fatal violence occurred.

According to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around noon on Saturday to reports of a shooting in the Indian Point subdivision, a residential neighborhood located approximately eight miles from Disney World.

When deputies arrived, they discovered three men shot to death outside the home they were renting. Sheriff Christopher Blackmon confirmed during a press conference that the victims were tourists visiting Florida.

The victims were identified as:

Robert Lewis Kraft, 70, of Holland, Michigan

Douglas Joseph Kraft, 68, of Columbus, Ohio

James John Puchan, 69, of Columbus, Ohio

Sheriff Blackmon stated that Robert and Douglas Kraft were brothers. A fourth man, Douglas’ twin brother, had been staying at the rental property but left the day before the shooting.

Investigators later detained and arrested Ahmad Jihad Bojeh, 29, who lived next door to the rental property. He was booked into the Osceola County Jail on three counts of murder.

Sheriff Blackmon said two firearms were recovered from Bojeh’s home, and detectives are working to determine whether one or both were used in the killings.

Authorities indicated that the shootings appear to be random, though the investigation remains in its early stages. The sheriff also noted that Bojeh was known to law enforcement, describing him as a frequent subject of prior calls for service in the neighborhood.

Violent crimes of this nature are especially alarming in areas heavily populated by visitors and short-term rentals. Millions of tourists travel to Central Florida each year expecting safety while staying near world-renowned attractions.

This case raises serious questions about:

Safety surrounding short-term rental properties

Prior warning signs and law enforcement interaction with the suspect

Whether additional preventative measures could have reduced the risk

Legal Rights of Families After a Fatal Shooting in Florida

When a loved one is killed due to criminal violence, surviving family members may have rights beyond the criminal prosecution. Under Florida law, families may be able to pursue wrongful death claims if negligence contributed to the circumstances surrounding the death.

Depending on the facts, potential civil liability may involve:

Property owners or managers

Security failures

Negligent supervision or failure to address known dangers

Wrongful death claims can help families seek compensation for:

Funeral and burial expenses

Loss of companionship, guidance, and support

Mental pain and suffering

Loss of financial support

These cases are complex and highly fact-specific, particularly when they involve violent crime and rental properties.

A shocking and violent incident inside a Barnes & Noble bookstore in Palm Beach Gardens has left a woman dead and a community searching for answers after police say the attack was unprovoked.

According to authorities, officers responded around 7:53 p.m. on December 25 to the Barnes & Noble located at 11380 Legacy Avenue, where they found a woman unresponsive with a knife embedded in her back, as detailed in an arrest report.

The victim, Rita Berenice Loncharich, was rushed to the hospital but did not survive surgery, police confirmed.

Investigators say surveillance footage and witness accounts showed no prior interaction between the victim and the suspect before the attack.

Police arrested Antonio Roderick Moore, 40, approximately 1,500 feet from the store, shortly after the stabbing. According to the arrest report:

Moore allegedly traveled to Palm Beach Gardens from Georgia by bus

He told police he had been charging his phone inside the store

He claimed an “internal buildup” caused a fight-or-flight response

He allegedly stabbed the closest person to him from behind using a fixed-blade knife concealed in his jacket

Witnesses reported hearing the victim say, “He stabbed me,” as she appeared to be in shock.

Authorities emphasized that the attack was not provoked, and Moore has since been charged with first-degree premeditated murder.

While criminal charges address punishment, they do not answer broader questions about public safety and prevention—especially when violent crimes occur inside retail establishments.

When a fatal assault happens in a store open to the public, investigators and attorneys often examine whether:

Security measures were in place

Employees were trained to recognize suspicious behavior

There was adequate staffing or monitoring

Prior safety incidents had occurred at or near the location

Emergency response protocols were followed

Retailers and property owners have a legal duty to provide reasonably safe premises for customers under Florida law.

Potential Civil Liability Beyond the Criminal Case

Although the suspect faces criminal prosecution, civil liability may also exist depending on the facts uncovered during investigation.

In some cases, a wrongful death claim may be pursued against third parties if negligence contributed to the conditions that allowed the attack to occur.

Potential defendants could include:

Property owners or landlords

Retail operators

Security contractors (if applicable)

Management companies

Civil claims focus on accountability, prevention, and compensation for the family—not punishment.

Under the Florida Wrongful Death Act, eligible surviving family members may be entitled to compensation for:

Funeral and burial expenses

Loss of companionship and protection

Mental pain and suffering

Loss of financial support and services

Medical expenses incurred before death

Each case is fact-specific and requires early legal review to preserve evidence such as surveillance footage, incident reports, and witness statements.

A multi-vehicle crash shut down the southbound lanes of Florida’s Turnpike in Osceola County on Friday morning, causing major traffic disruptions just before Exit 249 to Osceola Parkway, according to FL511. The roadway has since reopened, but the investigation remains active.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the collision involved three vehicles:

2021 Ford F-150

2024 Mazda CX-5

2020 Toyota Corolla

While the exact sequence of events has not yet been released, troopers confirmed that the Ford F-150 overturned during the crash. The driver of the truck was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No other occupants from the involved vehicles required medical transport.

Images from the scene show significant damage and traffic backups as emergency crews worked to clear debris and stabilize the overturned vehicle.

Crashes involving several vehicles require detailed investigation because responsibility may not be immediately clear. Factors investigators consider include:

Which vehicle initiated the chain reaction

Whether speeding, distracted driving, or sudden lane changes were involved

Weather and roadway conditions

Whether any driver failed to maintain a safe following distance

Impact points on each vehicle

Witness statements and available traffic or surveillance footage

Even if your vehicle was not the first to be struck, insurance companies may try to shift blame or minimize payouts. That’s why securing legal support early is critical.

Although only one driver was transported, rollover collisions can lead to serious injuries such as:

Head and neck trauma

Spinal injuries

Internal injuries

Broken bones

Soft tissue damage

Sometimes symptoms appear hours—or even days—after the crash. Anyone involved should undergo a medical evaluation to document potential injuries.

Legal Rights After a Multi-Vehicle Crash on the Turnpike

Drivers and passengers injured in a multi-car crash may be entitled to compensation for:

Medical expenses

Lost income

Pain and suffering

Vehicle repairs or replacement

Long-term rehabilitation needs

Because multiple insurance policies may be involved, determining liability and securing fair compensation can be challenging without experienced legal guidance.

A domestic disturbance in Oakland Park turned deadly early Tuesday morning when a woman was fatally stabbed inside an apartment, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO). Deputies responded to the 100 block of Northwest 41st Street shortly before 1 a.m. after receiving reports of a violent domestic incident.

When deputies entered the apartment, they found a woman suffering from multiple stab wounds. Despite emergency efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity has not yet been released pending notification of family members.

Crime scene tape surrounded the complex through the early morning hours as investigators processed the scene and interviewed witnesses.

BSO officials identified the suspect as 37-year-old Mario Alejandro Ramirez. When deputies located him, he appeared to be suffering from self-inflicted injuries. According to officials, deputies struggled to control the bleeding while simultaneously taking him into custody.

Ramirez was transported to a local hospital by Oakland Park Fire Rescue for medical treatment. He was later arrested and is now facing second-degree murder charges.

Residents at the apartment complex said they were shocked by the tragedy, describing the victim as a “sweet lady” and the suspect as someone who had always seemed friendly.

One neighbor told NBC6 that he heard yelling and the sound of furniture being moved or knocked over shortly before deputies arrived.

“I heard they were arguing, and I heard a large fight,” the neighbor said.
“When they opened the door, I saw a body on the floor… someone said the victim had been stabbed in the neck.”

For many in the community, the killing came as a devastating surprise.

Domestic violence continues to be a leading cause of serious injury and death across Florida. Incidents like this highlight the importance of early intervention and reporting signs of escalating violence.

Families affected by domestic violence tragedies often face significant emotional and financial burdens. They may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim to seek justice and hold the responsible party accountable.

A terrifying attempted sexual battery inside a Hialeah apartment complex laundry room has led to the arrest of a 21-year-old man, according to police.

Miami-Dade jail records confirm that Luis Antonio Rodas-Martinez was taken into custody Sunday evening and faces multiple felony charges, including:

Attempted sexual battery with a weapon causing serious bodily injury

Kidnapping with a weapon or aggravated battery

The incident occurred on Dec. 9 and has left the community shaken, raising serious questions about apartment-complex safety, security failures, and the rights of victims harmed due to preventable violence.

According to the arrest affidavit:

The victim was doing laundry in the complex’s laundry room when Rodas-Martinez allegedly approached her armed with a knife.

He pinned her against a washing machine, held a knife to her upper torso, and pulled down her pants while attempting to rape her.

The victim screamed for help, and a neighbor who heard her ran to the laundry room.

The witness saw the attacker pinning the victim with the knife still in hand.

The suspect fled the scene immediately after being confronted.

Investigators later reviewed surveillance footage, identified the suspect living nearby, and received confirmation of his identity from a family member. Rodas-Martinez was arrested and booked into jail, where he awaited a Monday court appearance.

While the criminal investigation focuses on the attacker, incidents like these often involve serious questions of negligent security—a leading cause of liability for apartment owners, property managers, and security contractors.

Apartment complexes have a legal duty under Florida law to take reasonable steps to keep residents and guests safe from foreseeable criminal acts. This includes:

Adequate lighting

Working surveillance cameras

Secured entrances and laundry facilities

Locking mechanisms on common-area doors

Proper background checks on employees

Proper warning of known risks in the area

Regular security patrols when warranted

If the property failed in any of these areas, the victim may have a strong negligent security claim, allowing her to seek compensation for:

Medical expenses

Psychological counseling

Pain and suffering

Lost income

Long-term emotional trauma

Security failures that enabled the attacker to gain access

Florida courts have repeatedly held apartment landlords responsible when inadequate security enables violent crimes such as sexual assault.

Survivors of Sexual Assault Have Rights — Both Criminal and Civil

Even though prosecutors will pursue criminal charges, survivors also have civil rights that allow them to pursue financial recovery and accountability from all responsible parties.

Potential liable parties may include:

Maintenance contractors responsible for locks or cameras

Any third party who may have contributed through negligence

Civil claims are especially important when survivors need long-term support for trauma, therapy, relocation, and rebuilding their lives.

Why Laundry Rooms and Isolated Common Areas Are High Risk

Laundry rooms inside apartment complexes are unfortunately common locations for assaults because:

They are often isolated and enclosed

Access may not be restricted to residents

Security cameras may be outdated or nonfunctional

Lighting may be poor

Doors are frequently propped open

Staff presence is limited

Property owners are required to anticipate risks like these and take preventive action.

Two women are alive today thanks to the heroic actions of a bystander who rushed into the water after a City of Miami waste management truck crashed through a fence and plunged into the Miami River Point Marina on Monday afternoon.

The incident occurred near Northwest 18th Terrace, where surveillance and cellphone video captured the dramatic aftermath. The truck barreled through a fence, knocked down a tree, struck a boat, and ultimately landed in the water with the two workers trapped inside.

According to officials, the women became trapped by the vehicle’s deployed airbags. As bystanders watched in shock, Rafael Valdez quickly sprang into action after hearing one of the victims scream for help.

Valdez suffered a deep cut above his right ankle but managed to swim to the sinking truck and pull the driver out through the window.

“I feel good that I got there on time and the two women got out safely,” Valdez said in Spanish. He emphasized that he does not consider himself a hero—only someone who reacted when others froze. “It’s two lives… two people that could’ve drowned.”

Emergency crews, including divers, arrived shortly afterward and assisted in removing the vehicle from the water.

Miami police confirmed Wednesday that the truck’s driver—whose identity has not yet been released—has been charged with careless driving. Authorities have not provided additional details regarding what caused the crash.

The City of Miami released a statement acknowledging the bravery of the private citizens who acted immediately:

“Thanks to the quick and courageous actions of private citizens who immediately responded and entered the water to assist, both individuals were safely rescued. We are grateful they were pulled from the water without suffering any injury.”

Legal Questions That Often Arise After Workplace Vehicle Accidents

When a municipal vehicle is involved in a crash causing injury or endangerment, several legal considerations may come into play:

Employer Liability

If the driver was performing job duties for a city department or private company, the employer may be liable for negligence, improper training, or vehicle maintenance failures.

Negligent Operation of a Commercial or Government Vehicle

Drivers of government and commercial vehicles owe a heightened duty of care due to the increased risk posed by large or heavy equipment.

Third-Party Liability

If mechanical failure, roadway hazards, or defective vehicle components contributed to the crash, additional parties may be responsible.

Good Samaritan Protections

Florida’s Good Samaritan Act typically provides civil immunity to individuals who offer emergency assistance in good faith, helping ensure people like Valdez are protected when stepping in to save lives.

When to Contact an Attorney After a Serious Crash

Even though the women in the truck survived, incidents like this raise concerns about:

• Workplace safety
• Driver negligence
• Adequacy of training and supervision
• Compensation for injuries and emotional trauma
• Potential negligence on behalf of government entities or contractors

Anyone injured in an occupational vehicle crash—or anyone who witnesses negligence involving municipal equipment—should speak with an attorney experienced in government and commercial vehicle claims.

A homicide investigation is underway after a woman was found with fatal upper-body trauma at an apartment complex along East Hillsborough Avenue in Tampa, according to the Tampa Police Department. Officers responded to the 2400 block of East Hillsborough Avenue just after 6 p.m. Monday evening and discovered the victim severely injured. She was transported to a hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

The victim’s identity has not yet been released, and investigators have not stated whether they are searching for a suspect. The investigation remains active.

When serious violent crimes occur at apartment complexes, one of the major legal questions is whether the property owner or management company may have failed to take reasonable steps to protect residents and guests from foreseeable harm. Florida law recognizes that apartment complexes, landlords, and property management companies have a duty to maintain reasonably safe premises, including adequate security measures when crime is foreseeable.

Determining Liability: When an Apartment Complex May Be Responsible

While the details of this case are still developing, there are several circumstances under which an apartment complex may be legally responsible for a homicide or violent assault on the property. Liability often depends on whether the crime was foreseeable and whether the property owner implemented reasonable security measures.

An apartment complex may be liable if:

There was a history of violent crime on or near the property: If police records, prior incidents, or crime grids show repeated robberies, assaults, shootings, or domestic violence calls in the area, property owners may be required to increase security measures.

The property lacked basic security features such as

Broken or unlocked gates

Poor or non-functioning lighting

Broken locks or windows

Lack of surveillance cameras

No security patrols in high-crime areas

Management failed to repair known hazards: If residents previously reported malfunctioning gate arms, broken doors, defective lighting, or inoperable security cameras—and management ignored or delayed repairs—this can be strong evidence of negligence.

There were no policies for visitor control or trespassers: Properties in high-crime areas should have systems in place to deter unauthorized individuals from entering the premises.

The complex ignored known threats or prior resident complaints: If tenants previously warned management about dangerous individuals, domestic disputes, stalking, or suspicious activity, failing to take action could lead to liability.

Florida’s Negligent Security Law

Under Florida law, negligent security claims fall under premises liability. Property owners are not automatically liable for every crime, but they are responsible for taking reasonable steps to protect tenants when criminal activity is foreseeable.

Common negligent security cases include:

Apartment shootings

Domestic violence incidents where management ignored warning signs

Parking lot assaults

Break-ins resulting in injury or death

Gate failures allowing criminals onto the property

Families may be entitled to pursue damages through a wrongful death lawsuit if negligent security contributed to the victim’s death.

What Families Can Recover in a Wrongful Death Negligent Security Case

Under the Florida Wrongful Death Act, surviving family members may seek compensation for:

Funeral and burial costs

Loss of companionship and protection

Loss of financial support or services

Mental pain and suffering

Medical expenses if the victim received care before passing

In cases involving violent crime, compensation may also include damages for the emotional and psychological trauma experienced by surviving family members.

What Evidence Helps Prove Negligent Security

To determine whether the apartment complex is liable, attorneys may gather:

Crime grids and police incident reports

Security camera footage

Maintenance logs showing unrepaired gates, locks, or lights

Resident complaints

911 call history

Witness statements

Access-gate records or key-fob data

Property management policies and security contracts

Early investigation is crucial, as important evidence can disappear quickly.

A late-night apartment fire at a student housing complex near Florida State University sent six residents and one firefighter to the hospital Wednesday night, according to the Tallahassee Fire Department. The blaze, which broke out around 10:30 p.m., erupted at Social Seminole — a popular student living community located just a mile from FSU’s main campus.

Fire crews responded to reports of flames in the 2800 block of Ocala Road, where they encountered a three-story apartment building engulfed in heavy smoke and fire. Multiple residents were trapped inside their units, and the fire was spreading rapidly.

A resident described the terrifying scene:

“I heard some screams and thought there was a fight going on,” said resident Josh Cardonas. “When I opened the door, I just saw the whole building up in flames. It spread so quickly. I’m speechless.”

Because of the severity of the fire and reports of people trapped inside, a second alarm was issued, prompting additional units to respond.

Firefighters immediately launched rescue operations:

Two people were rescued from the second floor.

Six residents were transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries but is expected to recover.

Several surrounding apartment buildings were evacuated as a precaution. Fire crews used multiple suppression units and aerial trucks to contain the flames and prevent the fire from spreading further. Despite the intensity, firefighters were able to save approximately half of the building’s structure.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Student housing communities near major campuses — including FSU — often face higher fire risks due to:

Dense populations and shared walls

Old or outdated electrical systems

Heavy appliance usage

Overloaded outlets or power strips

Cooking-related accidents

Cluttered hallways that hinder evacuation

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), cooking equipment, electrical failures, and smoking materials are among the leading causes of residential fires.

Legal Rights After an Apartment Fire Injury in Florida

When an apartment fire occurs, liability may fall on several different parties. Injured residents may have the right to pursue claims for medical expenses, lost income, pain and suffering, and property loss.

Potentially Liable Parties Include:

1. Property Owners or Management Companies

Provide adequate fire exits

Fix faulty wiring or electrical hazards

Comply with fire codes and inspection requirements

Address known safety complaints

Under Florida law, landlords must keep premises in reasonably safe condition and perform repairs affecting safety.

2. Maintenance Contractors

If third-party contractors performed electrical or structural work improperly, they may share liability.

3. Product Manufacturers

Defective appliances — such as stoves, heaters, air conditioners, or power strips — can cause fires. Manufacturers or distributors may be liable under product liability law.

4. Negligent Tenants

In some cases, a fire may be caused by the actions of another resident, such as:

Unattended cooking

Improper candle use

Smoking

Misuse of electrical equipment

Save damaged items for inspection

Request fire reports from TFD and building management

Avoid signing anything from the property owner’s insurance company before speaking to an attorney

A devastating fire at an Opa-locka auto shop has left a local business owner with severe, life-altering burn injuries. The incident occurred last Thursday at Teiko Auto Sales, a well-known auto shop owned by 43-year-old Sebastian Guyher, who has operated the business since 2016.

Guyher spoke from his hospital bed, sharing the terrifying moment the fire broke out and engulfed him in flames.

According to Guyher, he was working inside the shop when a vehicle suddenly ignited. Within moments, the fire spread rapidly, leaving him trapped in intense heat.

“One second I was there, and next thing I know, I just feel this hot heat and the fire just getting higher and my clothes catching fire and I just ran out,” he said.

Guyher sustained severe burns across his body — including his face, arms, and hands — and now faces an extensive recovery involving major surgeries to repair and regenerate damaged skin.

His wife and family continue to support him daily as he works toward healing and hopes to return to work and rebuild his business.

Despite the emotional and physical hardship, Guyher remains determined:

“I’m just looking to get better… be able to work again… and try to get my business back open.”

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue is actively investigating what caused the fire. Auto shop fires can stem from several hazards, including:

Faulty electrical wiring

Gasoline or chemical ignition

Defective equipment or machinery

Malfunctioning vehicles

Inadequate ventilation

Lack of proper fire suppression systems

Determining the cause is crucial — not only for safety but also for evaluating potential liability.

Who May Be Liable in an Auto Shop Fire?

Severe burn injuries often involve significant medical bills, lost income, permanent disability, and long-term rehabilitation. If negligence contributed to the fire, one or more parties may be legally responsible.

1. Vehicle Manufacturer

If the fire originated from a vehicle defect — such as faulty wiring, fuel system failure, or engine malfunction — the automaker or parts manufacturer may be liable under product liability laws.

2. Parts or Equipment Manufacturers

Tools, lifts, electrical equipment, ventilation systems, or other machinery used in the shop could malfunction due to defects or negligent maintenance instructions.

3. Property Owner or Landlord (if applicable)

If Guyher leases the property, the property owner could be liable for:

Unsafe electrical systems

Failure to maintain fire suppression systems

Code violations

4. Third-Party Contractors

If a contractor recently performed:

Electrical work

Renovations

Equipment installation

Fire system repairs

…and did so negligently, they may share liability.

5. Insurance Companies

Business owners injured on their own premises often face complicated insurance disputes. The insurer may fight or delay payment for:

Business interruption losses

Property damages

Medical expenses

Disability benefits

A lawyer can help force insurers to honor the policy limits.

Legal Options for Burn Victims in Florida

Burn injuries are among the most catastrophic injuries under Florida law. Victims may be entitled to compensation for:

Extensive hospital bills

Surgeries and long-term care

Lost income and future earning capacity

Loss of enjoyment of life

Punitive Damages

If the fire resulted from gross negligence — such as ignored safety violations — punitive damages may apply.

Why Fires at Auto Shops Are Especially Dangerous

Auto repair shops contain multiple high-risk factors:

Flammable liquids (fuel, oil, solvents)

Heat-producing equipment

Electrical tools

Chemical vapors

Confined working spaces

When a fire ignites in this environment, workers often have seconds to escape.

Because of these risks, strict safety standards apply — and violations can create grounds for liability.

If you or a loved one has been injured in a fire at a business:

1. Seek Immediate Medical Care

Burn injuries often worsen rapidly.

2. Preserve Evidence

Photos, videos, damaged equipment, and witness statements can be crucial.

3. Do NOT Discuss the Incident with Insurers Alone

Insurance companies often attempt to minimize payouts.

Fire cases require detailed investigation, expert testimony, and aggressive representation.

Authorities with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) are investigating after a man was found shot in the face Thursday night at an apartment complex in the Woodland Acres area of Jacksonville.

According to police, officers responded around 7:20 p.m. to the 8200 block of Kona Avenue, where they found the man standing outside a building within the complex suffering from a gunshot wound.

JSO said the victim provided conflicting statements about where the shooting occurred. Initially, he claimed that he was shot in the complex’s parking lot by an unknown individual. However, detectives canvassed the parking area and surrounding property but were unable to find any evidence of a shooting scene.

The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment and is expected to recover. Police have not released his name or provided an update on his condition.

At this time, authorities say there is no description of the shooter and the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear. Investigators are working to determine the exact location and motive behind the shooting.

JSO is asking for the public’s assistance as they continue their investigation. Anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the Woodland Acres neighborhood Thursday night—or who has surveillance footage from nearby homes or businesses—is encouraged to come forward.

Crime Stoppers (Anonymous): 1-866-845-TIPS

The shooting marks yet another incident in Jacksonville’s ongoing struggle with community gun violence. Police have continued to urge residents to report suspicious activity and help law enforcement remove illegal firearms from the streets.

Community leaders and organizations in the area are also renewing calls for cooperation and communication between residents and police to prevent further violence.

Legal Rights for Shooting Victims in Florida

Victims of shootings—or their families—may have the right to pursue civil claims for damages in addition to any criminal proceedings that follow. Property owners, management companies, or security firms can sometimes be held liable for negligent security if a shooting occurs on their premises due to poor lighting, lack of patrols, or inadequate safety measures.

We help clients investigate what went wrong, identify all responsible parties, and pursue full financial compensation for medical expenses, emotional trauma, and long-term recovery.
